BOTULINUM TOXIN

Everyone has heard of Botulinum Toxin (BOTOX) and it has become synonymous with smooth skin. Frown lines, forehead wrinkles and crow's feet can be combated very effectively with Botulinum Toxin. But what exactly is it?

Botulinum Toxin is a protein produced by a bacterium. Botulinum Toxin temporarily reduces muscle strength, which reduces or eliminates wrinkles. Botulinum toxin is used, among other things, to treat frown lines, forehead wrinkles, crow's feet, bunny lines (nose wrinkles), dimples in the chin and the gummy smile.

Other complaints such as migraines, tension headaches, excessive sweating and grinding teeth can also be treated effectively with it.

How does a treatment with Botulinum Toxin work?

A treatment with botulinum toxin takes about 10 to 20 minutes.

The skin may be slightly red or swollen in the area where the injection was given for the first few hours after the treatment.

One or more small blue spots the size of a pinhead may also be visible for a few days. These symptoms are almost always harmless and disappear quickly.

It takes 4 to 5 days before you notice the effect. The result is optimal after 14 days and lasts an average of 3 to 5 months.

Hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis stands for excessive perspiration or sweating. Sweating is a normal function of the body that ensures that the body cools down. Sweating increases during sports and exercise, tension, or when eating spicy food.

However, some people sweat so much that it bothers them. This can be a hindrance when interacting with other people, for example because people do not dare to shake hands because they are wet with sweat. The areas where hyperhidrosis most commonly occurs are the armpits, face, hands and feet. By means of botulinum toxin, sweating can be significantly reduced. It is injected through very fine punctures into the skin in those places where hyperhidrosis occurs, for example in the armpits.

The treatment is safe and very effective. After 4 to 8 months, the symptoms of excessive sweating slowly return.

The treatment must be repeated on average 2-3 times a year.

Botulinum Toxin against migraine and tension headaches

Everyone suffers from headaches at some point. Migraine is described as a severe, throbbing headache that is often on one side of the head and is accompanied by a wide range of other symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and seeing flashes of light. During a migraine attack, bright light and loud noises are unbearable. An attack can last from a few hours to a few days, but for most people it is over after one day.

With tension headaches, unlike with migraine, there is no nausea. In addition, the symptoms are often less severe.

Both tension headaches and migraines can be treated with botulinum toxin. One of the possible causes of headaches is the involuntary tensing of facial and neck muscles. Since this botulinum toxin is a muscle relaxant, treatment can help with this.

How does a Botulinum Toxin treatment work for migraines and tension headaches?

By injecting Botulinum Toxin in different places, the muscles become slacker and a lot of tension in the head, neck and shoulders disappears. It reduces the intensity of the pain and the number of attacks.

If headache complaints 'rise' from the neck, Botulinum Toxin injections in this area can be effective. Depending on the complaints, the doctor determines the locations where the botulinum toxin is injected.

A Botulinum Toxin treatment takes a maximum of 20 minutes and is not painful. The effects can be noticed after a few days and last for about six months.
